Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system. Instead of straightening your teeth and jaw with brackets and metal archwires, it uses a series of removable mouthpieces.

Invisalign mouthpieces fit snugly over your teeth and contain no BPS, latex, or gluten. As a result, they’re safe for pregnant people as well as those with allergies.

What types of alignment issues can Invisalign correct?

At Family Dentistry of West Chester, the team uses Invisalign to treat various alignment issues, including:

  • Crowding
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • A misaligned or malpositioned jaw

The team also uses Invisalign to close gaps between the teeth.

What does treatment with Invisalign involve?

At Family Dentistry of West Chester, Invisalign treatment begins with an in-office consultation. During the visit, your provider conducts an oral exam and takes a series of X-rays to assess the alignment of your teeth and jaw.

If your dentist finds any alignment issues, they take digital impressions of your mouth with an intraoral scanner.

Then, they upload your scans to a computer-aided design (CAD) program. Your dentist uses the CAD program to develop a custom orthodontic treatment plan that maps out the movements of your teeth and jaw.

After finalizing the plan, your provider explains it to you. Then, they send your scans to an Invisalign laboratory that designs and manufactures your first set of aligners. When your aligners are ready, you return to Family Dentistry of West Chester and try them on.

Over the course of Invisalign treatment, you visit Family Dentistry of West Chester every few weeks. At each checkup, your dentist monitors your progress and has you transition into a new set of aligners. Each new set improves the alignment of your teeth and jaw.

How long does orthodontics with Invisalign take?

The length of time that orthodontics with Invisalign takes depends on various factors, including the alignment issues addressed and your commitment to your dentist’s care plan. Most people achieve their goal within 6-12* months, but it can take 18 months or longer. Be patient, attend your appointments, and follow your dentist’s instructions.
